To its credit, the international community had scored a number of successes, such as progress achieved in Cambodia, the abolition of apartheid in South Africa and the current talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

وهنأ المجتمع الدولي بالاجماع المتلقيين ﻷقدم وأكبر جائزة عالمية للسلم كما أشاد المجتمع الدولي بشعب وحكومة النرويج لمساهماتهما ذات المغزى لبناء الثقة وتحقيق التصالح الوطني في جنوب افريقيا وفي أماكن أخرى.

It augurs well for the outcome of this session of the General Assembly that it has started against a backdrop of some success - however tenuous - in Haiti, in South Africa and in the Middle East.

In this connection the Philippines commends the work being done by the Secretary-General and the United Nations Observer Mission in South Africa (UNOMSA) in assisting the process of democratic change in South Africa and in enhancing the capacity of South Africans to build for peace and political tolerance.
وفي هذا الصدد تشيد الفلبين بالعمل الذي قام به اﻷمين العام، وبعثة مراقبي اﻷمم المتحدة في جنوب افريقيا للمساعدة في عملية التغير الديمقراطي في جنوب افريقيا وفي تعزيز قدرة شعب جنوب افريقيا على البناء من أجل تحقيق السلم والتسامح السياسي.

On behalf of my country, I should like to pay tribute to the men in the Middle East, in South Africa and in Cambodia who found the courage to take the path towards reconciliation and peace: Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, F.W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk and all those, known and unknown, who accompanied or even preceded them on this courageous path.
وأود، بالنيابة عن بلدي، أن أحيي الرجال في الشرق اﻷوسط وفي جنوب افريقيا وفي كمبوديا، الذين وجدوا الشجاعة للسير في طريق المصالحة والسلم؛ اسحق رابين وياسر عرفات، ودي كليرك ونلسون مانديلا وجلالة الملك نوردوم سيهانوك وجميع المعروفين وغير المعروفين الذين رافقوهم أو ربما سبقوهم على هذا الطريق الشجاع.

We should not be complacent, however: there is still ample room for improvement and I intend to invite the three organizations and, indeed, other concerned regional organizations, to work out together guidelines for future cooperation based on the success, as well as the mistakes, of our common experience in South Africa and elsewhere.
ولكن ينبغي ألا نغتر بما حدث، فإنه لم يزل ثمة متسع للتحسين، وأنا عازم على دعوة هذه المنظمات الثلاث، وفي الواقع مع غيرها من المنظمات الاقليمية المعنية، الى التفكير معا لوضع مبادئ توجيهية للتعاون في المستقبل، تقوم على أساس نجاح، وكذلك أخطاء، تجربتنا المشتركة في جنوب افريقيا وفي غيرها من اﻷماكن.

In conclusion, please allow me to express the opinion that lasting peace and prosperity for South Africa and the entire region will not be assured if systemic reforms are not supported by economic growth and a speedy solution of the exacerbated socio-economic problems of that country.
في الختام أرجو أن تسمحو لي بأن أعرب عن الرأي القائل بأن السلم والازدهار الدائمين في جنوب افريقيا وفي المنطقة كلها لا يمكن كفالتهما إلا إذا تدعمت اﻹصلاحات النظامية بنمو اقتصادي وبحل سريع للمشاكل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية المتفاقمة في ذلك البلد.
