I should like to start by thanking the United Nations for having organized this high-level plenary meeting in order to review the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead as we implement the Millennium Development Goals which were adopted in 2000, at the Millennium Summit, as part of the commitment to " spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty " .
