In his reply Mr. Geremek proclaimed his " readiness to begin exploratory talks " between OSCE and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

As a child, Geremek witnessed the degradation of those enslaved in the Warsaw ghetto. Miraculously saved from the Holocaust, he spent the rest of his life dreaming of a Poland where people lived in dignity and respected the dignity of others.
كان جيريميك مثالياً وعملياً في آن. في طفولته شهِد جيريميك استعباد الناس في الأحياء الفقيرة بمدينة وارسو. وبعد أن كان أحد الناجين بمعجزة من المحرقة، أمضى بقية حياته وهو يحلم ببولندا حيث يعيش الناس في كرامة ويحترمون كرامة الآخرين.

Geremek knew that a feeling of national identity and pride is priceless, and that in Poland, condemned to struggle for independence, they are necessary virtues. But he also knew that in the interwar period, the concept of “Polishness” was used as a tool of aggressive nationalism.
كان جيريميك يدرك أن الشعور بالهوية الوطنية والفخر بالوطن لا يقدر بثمن، وأن هذا الشعور من الفضائل الضرورية بالنسبة لبولندا المحكوم عليها بالنضال من أجل استقلالها. إلا أنه أدرك أيضاً أن مفهوم "البولندية" كان يستغل أثناء فترة الحرب الداخلية كأداة للقومية العدوانية.

Geremek’s essay about Marc Bloch, the French historian and anti-Nazi resistance fighter, is among his greatest intellectual and moral accomplishments. In writing about Bloch, Geremek described himself, particularly when he recalled Bloch’s self-definition as being part of “liberal, disinterested, and humanely progressive traditions of thought.”

Bronisław Geremek died with a clear conscience and clean hands. His lived Conrad’s credo: “I shall be faithful,” and also “To follow the dream, and again to follow the dream.”

The letter elicited a response from Mr. Z. Jovanović, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, who wrote to Mr. Geremek inviting a delegation of political directors to Belgrade " to start negotiations simultaneously on the acceptance of the OSCE mission in Kosovo and Metohija and the regulation of the membership rights of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the organization " .

Warsaw – When a friend dies unexpectedly, we recall his face, his smile, the conversations forever unfinished. Today I can see Bronisław Geremek, who died in a car crash a few weeks ago, in jail in Białołęka and hear his hoarse shouts from behind the bars of the prison on Rakowiecka Street.
وارسو ـ حين يموت أحد الأصدقاء فجأة فإنك تتذكر وجهه وابتسامته والمناقشات التي دارت بينكما ولم تكتمل. اليوم، وبعد مرور بضعة أسابيع منذ توفى برونيسلاف جيريميك في حادث سيارة، ما زلت أستطيع أن أراه في السجن في بيالوليكا وأسمع صرخاته الأجشة من خلف قضبان السجن في شارع راكويسكا. ما زلت أرى وأسمع برونيك في قلعة غاندولفو وهو يخاطب البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني.

Although events like the Stalinist terror were outside the Polish tradition as he conceived it, Geremek knew that a communal identity demands consciousness of the entirety of its history, all its good, all its evil. We must remember that acts which we now reject were also possible within our community, as we work to make what was once possible impossible.
ورغم أن أحداثاً مثل الرعب الستاليني كانت خارج نطاق التقاليد البولندية في نظره، إلا أن جيريميك كان يدرك أن الهوية الجمعية تتطلب وعيا�� وإدراكاً للتاريخ بالكامل، بكل حسناته وشروره. ويتعين علينا أن نتذكر أن التصرفات التي نرفضها الآن كانت أيضاً ممكنة الحدوث داخل مجتمعنا، بينما نعمل من أجل ضمان استحالة وقوع ما كان ممكناً ذات يوم.
