The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, during its twenty-ninth session held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 30 June to 18 July 2003, noted with concern the situation of women in Iraq.

As Iraq is a State party to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Committee has, on previous occasions, expressed concern about the situation of women in Iraq during the war.
ونظرا لأن العراق طرف في اتفاقية القضاء على جميع أشكال التمييز ضد المرأة فقد أعربت اللجنة في عدة مناسبات سابقة عن قلقها إزاء حالة المرأة في العراق أثناء الحرب.

39. Members of the Committee said that although the situation of women in Iraq was one of the most advanced in the region, and the Government had made great efforts to achieve gender equality, it would be desirable if it were to carry out that task with a stronger sense of commitment and to envisage reconsidering the issue of reservations with the goal of removing them, especially those concerning articles 2, 9 and 16 of the Convention.
٩٣ - وسلم بعض أعضاء اللجنة بأن حالة المرأة في العراق هي بين اﻷكثر تقدما في المنطقة، وبأن الحكومة قد بذلت جهودا جبارة لتحقيق تساوي الجنسين، لكنهم استحسنوا، رغم ذلك، أن يضطلع بهذه المهمة بحس التزام أقوي، وأن ينظر في امكان درس التحفظات مجددا مع توخي ازالتها، ولا سيما ما يتعلق منها بالمواد ٢ و ٩ و ٦١ من الاتفاقية.
