79. In its resolution 18/8, of 29 September 2011, the Human Rights Council requested the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to prepare a study on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples.

The main objective of the workshop was to obtain additional substantive input to the thematic study of the Expert Mechanism on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples, to be discussed at the fifth session of the Expert Mechanism in July 2012.
وكان الهدف الرئيسي لحلقة العمل هو الحصول على إسهامات إضافية موضوعية في الدراسة المواضيعية التي أجرتها آلية الخبراء بشأن دور اللغات والثقافات في تعزيز حقوق وهوية الشعوب الأصلية وحمايتها، لمناقشتها في الدورة الخامسة لآلية الخبراء في تموز/يوليه 2012.

The agenda item will provide an opportunity for the experts and observers to provide comments and suggestions on the draft report on the study on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples (A/HRC/EMRIP/2012/3).
وسيتيح تناول هذا البند من جدول الأعمال فرصة للخبراء والمراقبين لإبداء التعليقات وتقديم المقترحات بشأن مشروع التقرير عن الدراسة المتعلقة بدور اللغات والثقافة في تعزيز وحماية حقوق وهوية الشعوب الأصلية (A/HRC/EMRIP/2012/3).

5. Calls upon States to consider, in consultation and cooperation with indigenous peoples, initiating and strengthening, as appropriate, effective legislative and policy measures to protect, promote, respect and, where necessary, revitalize indigenous peoples' languages and culture, taking into account, as appropriate, the study on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples;
