The international community and Governments had made significant progress in implementing the International Plan of Action on Ageing since its adoption in 1982.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific held a regional preparatory consultation for the Second World Assembly on Ageing in Macao, China, on 27 and 28 September 2001, at which the Macao Recommendations for strengthening the draft International Plan of Action on Ageing were adopted.

In that connection, the Commission decided to establish an in-session open-ended working group during its thirty-ninth and fortieth sessions, in 2001 and 2002, devoted to revising the International Plan of Action on Ageing and the development of a long-term strategy on ageing for presentation to the Second World Assembly on Ageing, to be held in 2002.

At its fifty-fourth session, in 1999, the General Assembly entrusted the Commission for Social Development with the revision of the International Plan of Action on Ageing and the elaboration of a long-term strategy on ageing, based on new developments since 1982 (resolution 54/24).

The Second World Assembly on Ageing, to be held at Madrid in April 2002, will offer an opportunity to adopt a revised version of the International Plan of Action on Ageing, originally adopted in 1982, focusing on humanitarian and developmental aspects of ageing, aligned with modern, socio-cultural, economic and demographic realities.
