Thanks to the efforts of the United Nations, virtually all peoples of the world are today free from colonial domination. From this body, guided by the principle of self-determination, liberation movements, through the Special Committee on decolonization, aroused awareness of their individual fate.
وبفضل جهـود اﻷمم المتحدة تحررت كل شعوب العالم فعليا من السيطـــرة الاستعمارية ومن هذه المنظمة، واهتداء بمبدأ تقرير المصير، بثت حركات التحرير، من خلال اللجنة الخاصة لتصفية الاستعمار؛ الوعي بمصير كل منها.

Its members knew first-hand that United Nations peacekeeping personnel were working tirelessly under challenging circumstances and that it was through the Special Committee that the relevant stakeholders worked towards a unified strategic objective.

The United Nations could do more in many of those situations by engaging with the administering Powers through the Special Committee on decolonization, especially to end any systematic obstruction of popular choice of governance.

The General Assembly, through the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, was clearly responsible for considering new peacekeeping concepts and policies, and in that regard the strategies used by certain countries to hamper the negotiations on the Special Committee's report for 2013 were regrettable.
