The Chairman invited the Committee to continue its consideration of item 171 entitled “Need to examine the exceptional international situation pertaining to the Republic of China on Taiwan, to ensure that the fundamental right of its twenty-two million people to participate in the work and activities of the United Nations is fully respected”.

In addition to encouraging Member States to become party to the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988, the Organized Crime Convention and the Convention against Corruption, UNODC has advocated the implementation of the Forty Recommendations on Money-Laundering and Nine Special Recommendations on Terrorist Financing of FATF.

This approach would also meet the recommendations of the Office of Internal Oversight Services as presented in its 2005 management audit (AP2005/600/17), in which the Office called for the better positioning of this capacity to more effectively and efficiently use information and communications technology in addressing the strategic information needs of Headquarters and field missions to help them achieve their peacekeeping mandates.
