In the Malmö Ministerial Declaration, adopted by the Governing Council at its sixth special session in decision SS.VI/1, the Council recognized the growing trends of environmental degradation that threaten the sustainability of the planet, despite the commitment of the international community to halt them.

4. In late January 2008, the Council had also convened its sixth special session, on human rights violations emanating from Israeli military incursions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the recent ones in occupied Gaza and the West Bank town of Nablus.

5. At its sixth special session, held on 23 and 24 January 2008, the Council addressed the human rights violations emanating from Israeli military incursions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Gaza and the West Bank town of Nablus.

18. Pursuant to the decisions of the Human Rights Council during its sixth special session and its seventh session, the High Commissioner for Human Rights submitted two reports to the Council (A/HRC/7/76 and A/HRC/8/17).

At the 40th meeting, on 1 December, the Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Navid Hanif (Pakistan), introduced a draft resolution entitled " Report of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme on its sixth special session (A/C.2/55/L.46), which he submitted on the basis of informal consultations held on draft resolution A/C.2/55/L.17.
