I have the honour to convey that the Government of India has decided to nominate Mr. Shashi Tharoor to the post of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

It is our good fortune that the Department of Public Information right now should be headed by a person of such prodigious qualities as Under-Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor.

The Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Mr. Shashi Tharoor, delivered a comprehensive introductory statement and responded to questions raised by delegations during the general debate on the ongoing and fundamental reorientation of the focus and structure of the Department of Public Information at Headquarters and in the field.

Shashi Tharoor is currently United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information and has led the Department of Public Information since January 2001.
