In the wake of this unilateral proclamation of the sovereignty of the Kanak people, the Popular Congress has been organizing, in a traditional manner, the Kanak people in eight cultural spheres in order to form the basic Popular Congress.
وفي أعقاب هذا الاعلان مـــن جانب واحـد لسيادة شعب الكاناك، فإن المؤتمر الشعبي ما برح ينظم، بطريقة تقليدية، شعب الكاناك في ثمانية مجالات ثقافية لكي يشكل المؤتمر الشعبي اﻷساسي.

The Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, James Anaya, presented his reports to the Human Rights Council at its eighteenth session on the situation of the Sami people in the Sápmi region of Norway, Sweden and Finland (see A/HRC/18/35/Add.2), on the situation of indigenous peoples in the Republic of Congo (see A/HRC/18/35/Add. 5) and on the situation of Kanak people in New Caledonia (see A/HRC/18/35/Add.6).

Also recalls the observations and recommendations contained in the report of the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples on the situation of Kanak people in New Caledonia, made in the light of relevant international standards, to assist with ongoing efforts to advance the rights of the Kanak people in the context of the implementation of the Nouméa Accord and the United Nations-supported decolonization process;

As a long advocate for decolonization and independence, particularly for peoples in the Pacific region, Fiji reiterates its continuing interest in the progress thus far achieved for the Kanak people in New Caledonia under the Matignon and Nouméa Accords.
وانطلاقا من تاريخ فيجي الطويل في الدعوة إلى إنهاء الاستعمار وتحقيق الاستقلال، لا سيما بالنسبة لشعوب منطقة المحيط الهادئ، تكرر فيجي الإعراب عن اهتمامها المتواصل بالتقدم الذي أحرز حتى الآن لصالح شعب الكاناك في كاليدونيا الجديدة، وذلك في إطار اتفاقي ماتينيون ونوميا.

There are 37 major traditional leaders in New Caledonia, of which 32 exercised their rights by proclaiming the sovereignty of the Kanak people in Naratch on 24 September 1994.
وهنــاك ٣٧ زعيما تقليديا كبيرا في كاليدونيا الجديدة، منهــم ٣٢ مارسوا حقوقهم باعلان سيادة شعب الكاناك في ناراتش في ٢٤ أيلول/سبتمبر ١٩٩٤.

55. In signing the Agreement, the late President Tjibaou had assumed that following the Ouvéa massacre, France, which prided itself on being the birthplace of human rights, would ultimately recognize the right of the Kanak people to independence and thus move towards independence for them.

" In December 1987, the United Nations endorsed this international affirmation of the Kanak people's right to independence and also recognized FLNKS as the legitimate representative of that people.
