Of course, if the interpretation proposed by the author of the declaration and the interpretation of the treaty given by a competent third party are in agreement, there is no problem: the interpretative declaration remains merely interpretative and may play the same role in the process of interpreting the treaty as that of any other interpretative declaration.

If a " reservation " is intended to modify or exclude the legal effects of certain provisions of a treaty, an " interpretative declaration " has the purpose of specifying or clarifying the meaning or the scope attributed by the declarant to a treaty or to certain of its provisions.
