Other recommendations of the Political Declaration included ensuring that pregnant women have access to HIV services and eliminating gender inequalities, gender-based abuse and violence and increasing the capacity of women and adolescent girls to protect themselves from the risk of HIV infection (ibid., paras. 27 and 30).

At its twelfth session, in 2009, the Human Rights Council adopted resolution 12/27 on the protection of human rights in the context of HIV/AIDS, in which it urged States to eliminate gender inequalities and violence against women and to increase the capacity of women and girls to protect themselves from the risk of HIV transmission.
