2. In his report, the Secretary-General responded to the request of the General Assembly, in its decision 61/555, to report to the Assembly, at the second part of its resumed sixty-first session in May 2007, on the financial situation of the Institute for 2007.

In 1998-1999, several reports were issued on the financial situation of INSTRAW (see, for example, A/54/352).

It also supported the recommendations contained in the reports of the Working Group (A/57/330 and Add.1). The report of the Secretary-General on the financial situation of INSTRAW was submitted in response to the recommendation of the Fifth Committee to the General Assembly that the Secretary-General report to the Assembly on the overall financial situation of the Institute early during the main part of its sixtieth session (see A/59/641).

The Advisory Committee recalls that the level of expenditures realized for the period from 1 January to 30 September 2003 was lower than expected and that, at the time of its review of the report of the Secretary-General on the financial situation of INSTRAW (A/58/426), a Director of the Institute had not yet been appointed (see A/58/547, para. 2).
