The agreement between the Government of Guatemala and the United Nations that established the Commission entered into force on 4 September 2007, providing for a two-year mandate, which was extended for an additional two years through an exchange of letters between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala (20 March 2009) and the Secretary-General (15 April 2009).
