While the newly established Human Rights Council Branch of OHCHR provided core support to the Council and its mechanisms, innovative working methods throughout the Office were designed to stimulate and encourage active engagement by all OHCHR branches and divisions, especially in the universal periodic review process.

The participants exchanged views with the President of the Human Rights Council, Laura Dupuy Lasserre, Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch of OHCHR and the Chief of the Universal Periodic Review Section of OHCHR.

The Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch underlined the recent positive developments in the Human Rights Council with regard to the participation of civil society and national human rights institutions, interaction with special procedures, joint and cross-regional initiatives by States and the new modalities that the Human Rights Council had devised to address thematic and country situations in a timely manner.

46. The Human Rights Council Branch of OHCHR, with 22 staff, provides support to the Human Rights Council. A large majority of the members of the Human Rights Council which responded to the survey (86 per cent) rated their working relationship with OHCHR as very or somewhat effective, and the support provided by the Office to this body was generally well valued.
