At the same time, the United Kingdom disregarded the very existence of the Committee and publicly questioned its mandate with regard to the Non-Self-Governing Territories under British control, in defiance of the Charter and resolutions of the United Nations.

In the case of Namibia, the International Court of Justice had held that international law in regard to non-self-governing territories as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations made the principle of self-determination applicable to all of them.
