In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, UNEP established the Asian Tsunami Disaster Task Force, which supports the national authorities of the affected countries and the United Nations in assessing and addressing the environmental impacts from the disaster, providing environmental expertise and mobilizing and coordinating international efforts in the environmental sector.

Some developing countries have argued that liberalization of trade in EGS should provide conditions for the transfer, on a favourable commercial basis, of environmental technologies and associated " know-how " , as well as for the development of national capabilities, both human and institutional, in the environmental sector.
