2. During the reporting period, the Extraordinary Chambers concluded all proceedings in case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav, alias " Duch " , the former head of S-21, a Khmer Rouge torture and execution centre.

39. Regarding the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), the Secretary-General noted that the chamber of final appeal had issued its judgement in the case of Kaing Guek Eav, alias " Duch " , (case 001) in March 2012, sentencing Duch to life imprisonment.

35. The Supreme Court Chamber handed down its judgement in Case 001, bringing to a close the proceedings against Kaing Guek Eav, alias " Duch " , the former head of Tuol Sleng prison (S-21).

5. Case 001 was the first case tried before the Extraordinary Chambers. The single accused, Kaing Guek Eav, alias " Duch " , was the deputy head of the S-21 facility from 15 August 1975 to March 1976 and the head of S-21 from March 1976 until the collapse of the Democratic Kampuchea regime in January 1979.

6. On 3 February 2012, the Supreme Court Chamber rendered its decision on appeals against the Trial Chamber's decision sentencing Kaing Guek Eav to 35 years' imprisonment, quashing that sentence and increasing it to life imprisonment.

On 6 June 2013, Kaing Guek Eav was moved to Kandal provincial prison to serve the remainder of his sentence, with the understanding that the Ministry of the Interior may transport him back to the premises of the Extraordinary Chambers should there be a request from the Chambers that he attend further court proceedings.
