Japan, for its part, has been supporting the Commission's activities through the expertise of Professor Kensaku Tamaki as member; he was elected to the Commission in 2001, replacing Mr. Hamuro, who had served as a member since 1997.

The election was to fill the vacancy that had occurred in the Commission owing to the demise of Mr. Kensaku Tamaki (Japan) on 5 April 2011.

6. The Chairperson recalled that a Meeting of States Parties held on 11 August 2011 had elected Tetsuro Urabe (Japan) as a member of the Commission for the remainder of the term of Kensaku Tamaki, who had passed away on 5 April 2011.
6 - ذكّر الرئيس أن الدول الأطراف كانت انتخبت في اجتماع عقدته في 11 آب/ أغسطس 2011() السيد تيتسورو أورابي (اليابان) عضوا في اللجنة للفترة المتبقية من مدة عضوية السيد كينساكو تاماكي، الذي توفي في 5 نيسان/أبريل 2011().

2. First, it is with deep sadness that I recall that Kensaku Tamaki (Japan), a member of the Commission, passed away suddenly during the plenary part of the twenty-seventh session of the Commission on 5 April 2011.

84. Several delegations expressed their condolences for the untimely demise of Mr. Kensaku Tamaki (Japan), former member of the Commission, highlighting his contribution to the work of the Commission.

19. By-elections. On 11 August 2011, at a special meeting of the States parties to the Convention, Mr. Tetsuro Urabe (Japan) was elected to fill the vacancy that had occurred owing to the death of Mr. Kensaku Tamaki (Japan).

In accordance with article 2, paragraph 2, of annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Secretary-General addressed a communication dated 26 April 2011 to States parties informing them of a vacancy in the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf owing to the untimely passing away of Mr. Kensaku Tamaki (Japan) on 5 April 2011.
