At its 44th plenary meeting, on 22 July 1996, the Economic and Social Council decided to establish an ad hoc informal open-ended support group to assist the Commission for Social Development in the preparations for the International Year of Older Persons in 1999.

At the same meeting, the Commission heard an oral report by Aurelio Fernandez (Spain), also on behalf of Julia Tavares de Alvarez (Dominican Republic), Co-Chairpersons of the ad hoc informal open-ended support group to assist the Commission for Social Development in the preparations for the International Year of Older Persons in 1999.
٥ - وفي الجلسة نفسها، استمعت اللجنة الى بيان شفوي من أوريليو فرنانديز )اسبانيا( أدلى به أيضا باسم جوليا تافاريز دي الفاريز )الجمهورية الدومينيكية(، بصفتهما رئيسين مشاركين لفريق الدعم المخصص غير الرسمي المفتوح باب العضوية المعني بتقديم المساعدة الى لجنة التنمية الاجتماعية في اﻷعمال التحضيرية للسنة الدولية لكبار السن في عام ١٩٩٩.

34. At the same meeting, Mrs. Julia Tavares de Alvarez (Dominican Republic), in her capacity as Coordinator of the Consultative Group for the International Year of Older Persons and also on behalf of Mr. Aurelio Fernández (Spain) in his capacity as Coordinator of the Consultative Group, made an oral report on the activities of the Consultative Group in assisting the Commission for Social Development in the preparations for the Year (1999).
