Thanks to the implementation of the " Comprehensive Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy " approved by the Government in May 2002 on the basis of the 2001-2010 Social and Economic Development Strategy, poverty (according to national poverty line) has been cut from 58.1 per cent in 1993 to 14.82 per cent in 2007, making Viet Nam one of the first countries to fulfill the MDG in poverty reduction.
