Some delegations also proposed a similar contact with the Economic Community of West African States and other interested regional and subregional bodies to promote better understanding of the potential environmental impact of deep seabed mining in the areas beyond national jurisdiction.

(a) A programme for oceanographic and environmental baseline studies in accordance with the relevant set of Regulations and any environmental regulations and procedures issued by the Authority that would enable an assessment of the potential environmental impact of the proposed exploration activities, taking into account any guidelines issued by the Authority;
(أ) برنامج دراسات أساسية أوقيانوغرافية وبيئية وفقا لمجموعة الأحكام ذات الصلة من النظام وأية أنظمة وإجراءات بيئية تصدر عن السلطة من شأنها أن تتيح إجراء تقييم للأثر البيئي المحتمل لأنشطة الاستكشاف المقترحة، مع مراعاة أية مبادئ توجيهية تصدر عن السلطة؛

(b) A description of the programme for oceanographic and environmental baseline studies in accordance with the Regulations and any environmental rules, regulations and procedures established by the Authority that would enable an assessment of the potential environmental impact of the proposed exploration activities, taking into account any recommendations issued by the Legal and Technical Commission;

9. With regard to the substantive work of the Authority, the Secretary-General stated that as in previous periods, the substantive work of the Authority during the 2008-2010 period would focus on the scientific and technical work necessary to carry out its functions under the Convention and the 1994 Agreement, and in particular to promote a better understanding of the potential environmental impact of deep seabed mining.
