An important topic of research has been the analysis of the intrinsic disabilities of Island Developing Countries, resulting from factors such as small size, high transport costs and proneness to natural disasters, lending a great deal of vulnerability to the economies of such countries, including those that are apparently economically better off.
وكان من ضمن مواضيع البحث الهامة تحليل العوائق المتأصلة للبلدان الجزرية النامية الناجمة عن عوامل مثل صغر حجمها، وتكاليف النقل المرتفعة، وتعرضها للكوارث الطبيعية، اﻷمر الذي يجعل اقتصادات هذه البلدان ضعيفة جدا، حتى تلك التي يبدو أنها في وضع اقتصادي أفضل.

It also urged relevant organizations of the United Nations system to take adequate measures to respond positively to the particular needs of Island Developing Countries and continue to report on such measures through the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), as appropriate.

18. Furthermore, the export economy in many island developing countries is indirectly threatened by the damage caused by global hazards, such as global warming and the resulting rising sealevel, which exacerbate the economic and environmental fragility of Island Developing Countries.
