In October 2007, at the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment follow-up workshop, partners felt that Millennium Ecosystem follow-up should inform the consultative process towards an international mechanism of scientific expertise on biodiversity.

9. Three main focal areas have been identified for the platform based on recommendations from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment independent evaluations and the international mechanism of scientific expertise on biodiversity consultation process:

Following from UNEP's hosting of the MA, and support to the International Mechanism on scientific expertise for Biodiversity (IMoSEB), UNEP convened an Intergovernmental and Multistakeholder meeting to discuss IPBES (Putra Jaya, Malaysia 10-12 November 2008).
وفي أعقاب استضافة برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة لتقييم النظام البيئي للألفية، وتقديمه الدعم للآلية الدولية للخبرات العلمية في مجال التنوع البيولوجي، عقد البرنامج اجتماعاً حكومياً دولياً ولأصحاب مصلحة متعددين (بوتراجايا، ماليزيا، 10-12 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2008).

In March 2008, a concept note was prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme explaining the rationale for the establishment of an intergovernmental multi-stakeholder platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services, based on a request from the international science committee of the International Mechanism of scientific expertise on Biodiversity process and the partners of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment follow-up strategy.
