The Committee must not allow the Puerto Rican people to make the mistake of aspiring once again for an alternative status that would not be in accordance with public international law.

Mr. Hamed (Syrian Arab Republic) said that all of the Committee's resolutions on Puerto Rico had stressed that Puerto Rico was part of Latin America and the Caribbean, and had called on the Government of the United States to implement their provisions forthwith and to assume its responsibility to expedite a process that would allow the Puerto Rican people to fully exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
