The international community as a whole and the United Nations in particular had a responsibility to focus all their attention on putting an end to the inhumane practices of the Israeli regime and protecting defenceless Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories.

As recently as today, 9 September 2008, and as reported by the media, the Israeli Cabinet Minister, Rafi Eitan, once again put on display the aggressive and terrorist nature of the Israeli regime by making a threat that the said regime finds it an acceptable option to kidnap the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

We support the resolution adopted by the Council which, inter alia, calls for condemnation of the Israeli regime's ongoing military operations in the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly in the Gaza Strip; the immediate cessation of the Israeli regime's military attacks throughout the Palestinian occupied territory, particularly in the Gaza Strip; and the immediate withdrawal of its military forces from the Gaza Strip.
ونؤيد القرار الذي اتخذه المجلس ويطالب فيه، في جملة أمور، بإدانة العمليات العسكرية الجارية من جانب النظام الإسرائيلي في الأرض الفلسطينية المحتلة، ولا سيما في قطاع غزة؛ والوقف الفوري للهجمات العسكرية للنظام الإسرائيلي على الأرض الفلسطينية المحتلة، وخاصة في قطاع غزة؛ والانسحاب الفوري لقواته العسكرية من قطاع غزة.

7. Notwithstanding the global attempts to establish nuclear-weapon-free zones, particularly in the Middle East, it is regrettable that, 30 years after the adoption by the General Assembly of the resolution, initially proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, no progress has been achieved towards its realization owing to the intransigent policy of the Israeli regime.
7 - وبالرغم من المحاولات العالمية لإنشاء منطقة خالية من الأسلحة النووية وخصوصا في الشرق الأوسط، فإن ما يدعو للأسف أنه بعد 30 عاما من صدور قرار الجمعية العامة، الذي اقترحته جمهورية إيران الإسلامية أصلا، بشأن إنشاء منطقة خالية من الأسلحة النووية في الشرق الأوسط، لم يطرأ أي تقدم على مستوى التنفيذ بسبب السياسة المتعنتة للنظام الإسرائيلي.

We have also witnessed the repeated failure of the Council to live up to its responsibility and to take appropriate action against the Israeli regime's continuous aggression and mass atrocities in the occupied Palestinian territories and in neighbouring countries.
وشهدنا أيضا عجز المجلس المتكرر عن تحمل مسؤوليته وعن اتخاذ إجراءات ملائمة ضد العدوان المستمر والفظائع الجماعية للنظام الإسرائيلي في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة وفي البلدان المجاورة.
