وأعربت عن أسفها لاستقالة السيد ماتادين الذي انتُخب مؤخراً رئيساً للمحكمة العليا في موريشيوس.

With regard to its functions and efficiency, the Commission paid regular visits to places of detention to check that prisoners enjoyed their rights under the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and had recently visited Gabode prison, where some of the persons mentioned by Mr. Matadeen were detained.

In Gabode prison, the Commission had noted that some persons were held in pretrial detention for an excessive period of time. It had publicly denounced that situation and had stipulated that cases should be heard within a reasonable time limit. Several members of the opposition, whose names Mr. Matadeen had mentioned, had been released on parole the following month.
وقد لاحظت اللجنة الوطنية لحقوق الإنسان أن بعض الأشخاص المحتجزين في سجن غابود هم موضوعون رهن الحبس الاحتياطي منذ فترة جد طويلة؛ فأدانت علناً هذا الوضع القائم وطالبت بمعالجة القضايا ضمن حدود زمنية مقبولة، وأُفرج في الشهر التالي بشكل مؤقت عن عدة أعضاء من المعارضة الذين ذكر السيد ماتادين أسماءهم.

27. Mr. Matadeen asked the delegation to comment on certain NGO reports that translations into official languages of the laws adopted by the Legislative Assembly and final judgements were of poor quality.

Mr. Matadeen said that the written replies of the State party concerning the right to life and the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, liberty and security of person, and the treatment of persons deprived of liberty were very brief and that it denied all the Committee's allegations.

In a letter dated 9 January 2014, Kheshoe Parsad Matadeen (Mauritius), who was elected at the thirty-second Meeting of States Parties to the Covenant held on 6 September 2012 for a term that was due to expire on 31 December 2016, submitted his resignation from the Committee effective from 9 January 2014.

The Chair said that, pursuant to article 33, paragraph 2, and article 34, paragraph 1, of the Covenant, the Secretary-General had declared the seat of Mr. Matadeen (Mauritius) vacant following his resignation and by note verbale of 21 January 2014 had invited States parties to submit nominations for the purpose of filling that vacancy.
