Mr. Maimeskul (Ukraine) said that his Government strongly supported the purposes of the CCW regime and welcomed the substantive work done by the groups and meetings of experts established under the Convention and its Protocols.

Mr. Maimeskul (spoke in Russian): Mr. President, since this is the first time I have taken the floor at this session of the Conference on Disarmament under your presidency, I should like first of all to recognize your contribution and that of your predecessor, Ambassador Hannan, in trying to achieve progress in the work of the Conference.

Mr. Maimeskul (Ukraine) said that Ukraine, which strongly supported the regime established by the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, considered that the Fourth Review Conference was an important opportunity for the High Contracting Parties to take stock of the significant progress made.
