That resolution built upon the outcome of the World Assembly on Ageing held in 1982 and on the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, which were adopted in 1991.

In humanitarian and post-conflict settings, land-related issues have often been avoided and, where engagement exists, efforts are focused on restitution for the displaced in line with the United Nations Principles on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons, although it is also necessary to address tenure security and access to housing, land and property.

Nearly one decade later the continuing discussions on ageing resulted also in the adoption of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, and soon thereafter of the global targets on ageing for the year 2001.
وبعد عقد تقريبــــا أدت المناقشات المتواصلة حول الشيخوخة إلى اعتماد مبادئ اﻷمم المتحدة المتعلقة بكبار السن، وبعد ذلك بقليــــل اعتمدت اﻷهداف العالمية للشيخوخة لعام ٢٠٠١.

The 18 United Nations Principles for Older Persons, adopted by the General Assembly at its forty-sixth session, also provided useful guidance.
كما تمثل أيضا مبادئ اﻷمم المتحدة المتعلقة بالمسنين التي اعتمدتها الجمعية العامة في دورتها السادسة واﻷربعين، مرجعا مفيدا.

Nearly three quarters of the Governments surveyed have promulgated either the United Nations Principles for Older Persons or other legislation on the rights of the older citizens.
وقرابة ثلاثة أرباع الحكومات التي سُئلت قد اشترعت مبادئ اﻷمم المتحدة المتعلقة بكبار السن أو سنت تشريعات أخرى لحقوق المواطنين المسنين.

These are intended to promote and improve the independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and dignity of older persons, as set out in the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.

In this 1999 International Year of Older Persons, the Secretary-General has urged that the United Nations Principles for Older Persons (DPI/1261/Rev.1) be widely disseminated and acted upon.
وفي هذه السنة الدولية لكبار السن، ١٩٩٩، حث اﻷمين العام على نشر " مبادئ اﻷمم المتحدة المتعلقة بكبار السن " (DPI/1261/Rev.1) على نطاق واسع وعلى العمل وفقا لها.
