Recent events in the Straits of Taiwan have highlighted the tension that exists in that region of the world, a region which is otherwise currently witnessing a most dynamic economic growth.
واﻷحداث التي حدثت مؤخرا في مضايق تايوان قد أبرزت التوتر القائم في تلك المنطقة من العالم، منطقة تشهد، حاليا بخلاف ذلك، نموا اقتصاديا بالغ النشاط.

We believe that, the more the two sides of the Taiwan Straits participate equally in international organizations, the more this will help to ease the hostility between them. Mutual confidence will be built thereby, and will help develop a cordial relationship and be conducive to peaceful unification.

3. The Chinese Government has been consistently engaged in maintaining peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits and achieving peaceful reunification of China.
3 - والحكومة الصينية تعكف بشكل ثابت على صون السلم والاستقرار في مضايق تايوان وتحقيق إعادة توحيد البلدين بالطرق السلمية.

We wish more than anybody else to realize national reunification through peaceful means, and China wishes more than any other country to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and the Asia-Pacific region.

Thus the General Committee of the sixty-first session of the General Assembly has once again rejected the inclusion of this issue and the issue of so-called " peace in the Taiwan Straits " in the agenda of the General Assembly on 12 September of this year.

During the just concluded general debate of the sixtieth session of the General Assembly, a very few countries once again raised the issues of so-called " Taiwan participation in the United Nations " and " peace in the Taiwan Straits " .

He called for increasing contacts across the Taiwan Straits and negotiations that would lead to reunification in which Taiwan would'exercise a high degree of autonomy and enjoy legislative and independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication'and'may also retain its armed forces and administer its party, governmental and military systems by itself'.

With regard to item 159 of the draft agenda (Need to review General Assembly resolution 2758 (XXVI) of 25 October 1971 owing to the fundamental change in the international situation and to the coexistence of two Governments across the Taiwan Strait), the General Committee decided not to recommend its inclusion.

The President: In respect of paragraph 45, the General Committee decided not to recommend the inclusion of item 159, “Need to review General Assembly resolution 2758 (XXVI) of 25 October 1971 owing to the fundamental change in the international situation and to the coexistence of two Governments across the Taiwan Strait”.

In 1996, the primary concerns were fears of rising United States interest rates, slowing export growth and other specific domestic issues, such as the troubled property and financial sectors in Thailand, overheating of the property sector in Singapore, riots in Indonesia and the tensions in the Straits of Taiwan.
