346. The specific measures to be implemented by the Government for the prevention and control of environmental pollution, as set out in the draft Economic and Social Development Programme, 1994-1998, are aimed at:

36. The Heads of State of the Pacific island countries maintained a strong communal interest in the reduction and eventual elimination of nuclear weapons and in protecting the Pacific region from environmental pollution.

13. Being fully aware of the destructive effects of the production and testing of nuclear weapons, Myanmar had ratified the South-East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free-Zone Treaty which was designed to protect the region from environmental pollution and the hazardous effects of radioactive waste and other radioactive materials.

This Treaty, which entered into force on 2 March 1997, is not only aimed at keeping the Southeast Asia region free from nuclear weapons, but also at protecting the region from environmental pollution and the hazards posed by radioactive waste and other toxic materials.
