His Excellency Mr. Melchior Ndadaye was the first President of the Republic of Burundi democratically elected by the people.

Finally, I wish to thank Mr. Insanally for allowing us this opportunity to share our grief with the people of Burundi over their irreparable loss, and to pay homage to that fine son of Africa, the late President Melchior Ndadaye.
وأخيرا، أود أن أشكر السيد إنسانالـي علــى إعطائنا هـذه الفرصـة لكـي نشاطـر شعــب بورونـدي أحزانه علـى خسارته التـي لا تعـوض، ولكـي نكرم ذلك اﻹبن البار لافريقيا، الرئيس الراحل ميلشيور نداداي.

Mr. VORONTSOV (Russian Federation) (interpretation from Russian): On behalf of the members of the Eastern European Group of States, I would like to pay tribute to the deceased President of Burundi, Mr. Melchior Ndadaye, who fell victim to the military coup against the democratically elected Government of Burundi.
بالنيابة عن أعضاء مجموعة دول أوروبا الشرقية، أود أن أشيد بذكرى رئيس بوروندي الفقيد، السيد ميلشيور حكومة نداداي، الذي راح ضحية الانقلاب العسكري ضد بوروندي المنتخبة ديمقراطيا.

This investigation concluded that the majority of the military hierarchy of Burundi was involved in, or had not opposed, the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye and other high-ranking government officials.

On 12 November 1997, Philippe Melchior was appointed Head of the Institute of Higher Studies on Internal Security (IHESI) and has held the office since then.

1. Since the abortive coup d'état and the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye on 21 October 1993, and the massacres that immediately followed, Burundi has been going through a deep-seated crisis.

43. On 5 November 1996, Melchior Bigirimana and Marc Sindayigaya, both from Muramvya province, and Leonidas Ndayishimiye, from Rutana province, all of them returnees from Zaire, were allegedly arrested by Captain Bashirahishize on arrival at Bujumbura, in the Rohero district.
