Reaffirming its support for the good offices mission of the Secretary-General, led by Assistant Secretary-General Haile Menkerios, and expressing strong support for the continuing efforts of the Secretary-General and his representatives,

As a result of his meeting with President Mugabe in Rome during the World Food Summit, in which he persuaded the Government to engage and work with the United Nations, he dispatched Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Haile Menkerios to Zimbabwe with the mandate to discuss ways to improve the political climate ahead of the run-off elections.

46. Finally, I would like to commend my Special Envoy, Haile Menkerios, and the African Union High-level Implementation Panel led by Thabo Mbeki for their sustained efforts to assist the Sudan and South Sudan in resolving the outstanding issues between them, including those related to Abyei.

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Sudan and South Sudan, Haile Menkerios (by means of videoconference from Addis Ababa), and the Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNISFA, Yohannes Tesfamariam, briefed the Council.

On 9 August 2012, the Council held an informal interactive dialogue to consider the implementation of resolution 2046 (2012) by the Sudan and South Sudan, with the participation of the Chairman of the African Union High-level Implementation Panel and former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, and the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Sudan and South Sudan, Haile Menkerios.
