In order to promote food security and agricultural development in Africa, ECA is carrying out activities to follow up its successful advocacy for articulating and strengthening the implementation of the AU/NEPAD Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) around the development of the value chains for strategic food commodities within a framework of regional integration.

The slowing growth of the food supply is due to many factors, including recent increases in the cost of seeds and fertilizer as energy prices soared, long-term underinvestment in rural infrastructure and agricultural development in many developing countries, growing constraints in access to land and water, and the reallocation of land to the production of biofuels.
