In 1998, the Assembly held a diplomatic conference of plenipotentiaries at which it adopted the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and resolution F of the Final Act of the Conference, which established the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court.

In accordance with resolution F of the Final Act of the Diplomatic Conference, a Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court was established with the task of preparing proposals for practical arrangements for the establishment and coming into operation of the Court, including the finalization of several draft texts.

The United Nations Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court, by resolution F of the Final Act of the Conference, established the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court with the mandate to prepare proposals for practical arrangements for the establishment and coming into operation of the Court, including the draft texts of:

After the adoption by the Conference of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on 17 July 1998 and resolution F of the Final Act of the Conference, which established the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court, the Assembly continued its consideration of the item at its fifty-second to fifty-fifth sessions (resolutions 52/160, 53/105, 54/105 and 55/155).
