Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui were surrendered to the Court on 17 October 2007 and 7 February 2008 respectively.

The Court intensified its efforts to raise awareness and increase understanding of the judicial proceedings among the communities most affected by alleged crimes in connection with the cases of The Prosecutor v. Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, at a trial stage, and The Prosecutor v. Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui at a pre-trial phase.

The presentation of evidence is nearing its conclusion in the second trial arising from the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo concerning charges against Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui for the use of child soldiers, rape, murder and other crimes.

The arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court in early 2008 of Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo is significant and may encourage the national authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to pursue other senior civilian and military officials suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

During the reporting period, the prosecution conducted a total of 34 missions to eight countries for trial preparations and investigations related to the ongoing cases in the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: The Prosecutor v. Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, The Prosecutor v. Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui, and the investigation of a third case focusing on alleged crimes committed in the North and South Kivu provinces.
