It covers the activities of the Division on the analysis of fertility, mortality and international migration; the preparation of world population estimates and projections; the monitoring of population policies; the analysis of the interrelations between population and development; and the monitoring and dissemination of population information.

In addition to its policy and advocacy role, the Population Research Unit is conducting, with the financial and technical support of UNFPA, a regional research programme including analysis of demographic, socio-economic and health data at country and regional levels; policy-oriented research on migration; studies on Arab women in society and their contribution to development; and dissemination of population information.
