The present report covers implementation of the decisions of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio, 1992) related to the first programme element of category III, " Scientific research, forest assessment and development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management " , of the programme of work of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Panel on Forests.

Consequently, monitoring, assessment and reporting requirements at the regional or international levels need to be integrated into national forest programmes and the development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management.
