Mr. Mejdoub (Tunisia) (spoke in Arabic): While the General Assembly has been examining the Palestinian question this year, the explosive security and economic situation in the region has been dangerously deteriorating to an unprecedented degree, with catastrophic humanitarian conditions and a total halt to the peace process.
السيد المجدوب (تونس): تتطرق الجمعية العامة هذه السنة إلى مسألة فلسطين في ظل تردي الأوضاع بشكل غير مسبوق. فمن وضع أمني متفجر، ووضع اقتصادي بائس، وظــروف إنسانيــة كارثيـــة، إلى تعثُّر تام لمسيرة السلام.

8. Mr. Mejdoub (Tunisia) expressed his conviction that, under the leadership of the new High Commissioner, Mr. Sergio de Melo, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights would continue the leading role it had played in the defence of human rights under Ms. Mary Robinson.
