As to urgent appeals, Egypt was sent a second such appeal concerning Professor Nasr Abu Zeid of Cairo University, who was tried on 13 June 1995 by a court for his writings on interpretations of the Koran deemed anti-Islamic by Islamist plaintiffs.
٢٨ - وفيما يتعلق بالنداءات العاجلة فقد تلقت مصر نداء عاجلا ثانيا بشأن موضوع الاستاذ نصر أبو زيد بجامعة القاهرة الذي حكمت عليه المحكمة في ١٣ حزيران/يونيه ١٩٩٥ لكتاباته في تفسير القرآن التي اعتبرها معتمد الدعوة من اﻹسلاميين معادية لﻹسلام.

The Special Rapporteur had also addressed two urgent appeals to Egypt concerning the case of Professor Nasr Abu Zeid, who had been declared an apostate by Egyptian law, in response to a petition from Islamic plaintiffs and condemned to divorce his wife, as she was not permitted to continue to live with a non-Muslim.

On 23 February 1996 the Special Rapporteur made an urgent appeal on behalf of al-Sir Mekki Abu Zeid, Hassabu Ibrahim, Walid Abu Seif and Ahmad al-Tom, who were said to be members of the Alliance of National Democratic Forces. They were reportedly arrested during the first week of February 1996 in Khartoum by members of the security forces.

12. The urgent appeals sent to Egypt concern the case of Professor Nasr Hamed Abu Zeid, of Cairo University, declared an apostate by the Egyptian courts, following a petition by Islamic plaintiffs, on account of his writings on the interpretation of the Koran, which were deemed anti—Islamic.

38. Mr. Abu Zeid (Egypt) said that the developing countries were contributing most of the human resources to peacekeeping operations, while the developed countries were mainly providing financing or sending personnel to the least dangerous missions; that situation was a source of deep concern to many developing countries.
