In addition to the immunities and privileges specified in section 18, section 19 of the General Convention provides that the Secretary-General and all Assistant Secretaries-General should be accorded in respect of themselves, their spouses and minor children, the privileges and immunities, exemptions and facilities accorded to diplomatic envoys, in accordance with international law.

The Assembly did so by adopting the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations on 13 February 1946 (resolution 22 (I)). Article V of the Convention provides for privileges and immunities of officials and provides that the Secretary-General shall be accorded the privileges, immunities, exemptions and facilities accorded to diplomatic envoys, in accordance with international law.
