In that connection, my delegation is of the view that if we are to succeed in achieving sustained economic growth and sustainable development in Africa, through which we can eradicate poverty and hunger, substantial progress is required in the following areas.

In its resolution 56/188 of 21 December 2001, the General Assembly reaffirmed that gender equality is of fundamental importance for achieving sustained economic growth and sustainable development and that investing in the development of women and girls has a multiplier effect, in particular on productivity, efficiency and sustained economic growth.
1 - في قرارها 56/188، المؤرخ 21 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2001، أعادت الجمعية العامة تأكيد أن للمساواة بين الجنسين أهمية أساسية في تحقيق النمو الاقتصادي المطرد والتنمية المستدامة وأن للاستثمار في تنمية المرأة والفتاة أثرا مضاعفا، ولا سيما على الإنتاجية والكفاءة والنمو الاقتصادي المطرد.

41. At the International Conference on Population and Development, held at Cairo in September 1994, 179 States, including African Governments, defined a new paradigm of population and development which goes beyond mere numbers of human beings and demographic targets to place the well-being of individual women and men at the centre of all activities aimed at achieving sustained economic growth and sustainable development.
١٤ - في المؤتمر الدولي للسكان والتنمية الذي عقد في القاهرة في أيلول/سبتمبر ١٩٩٤، شرعت ١٧٩ دولة بما فيها الحكومات اﻷفريقية، في وضع نموذج جديد للسكان والتنمية يتجاوز مجرد اﻹحصاءات الرقمية للبشر واﻷهداف الديمغرافية إلى وضع رفاه اﻷفراد من النساء والرجال في محور كل نشاط من اﻷنشطة الرامية إلى تحقيق النمو الاقتصادي المطرد والتنمية المستدامة.

8. The Assembly, in its resolution 50/122 of 20 December 1995, reaffirmed that such a dialogue should be conducted in response to the imperatives of mutual interests and benefits, genuine interdependence, shared responsibility and the partnership for achieving sustained economic growth and sustainable development as well as improving the international economic environment that is conducive to such development.
٨ - أكدت الجمعية العامة من جديد، في قرارها ٥٠/١٢٢ المؤرخ ٢٠ كانون اﻷول/ ديسمبر ١٩٩٥، أنه ينبغي إجراء هذا الحوار استجابة للحتميات التي تفرضها المصالح والفوائد المتبادلة، والترابط الحقيقي، وتقاسم المسؤولية، والشراكة من أجل تحقيق النمو الاقتصادي المطرد والتنمية المستدامة إلى جانب تحسين البيئة الاقتصادية الدولية على نحو يفضي إلى تحقيق هذه التنمية.
