The General Assembly, in its resolution 53/208 C of 18 December 1998, stressed “the need for the continuous development, maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites, with a view to achieving equal treatment of the six official languages on those Web sites”.

122. At its 416th meeting, on 21 April, the Committee on Conferences decided to include in its agenda for 1999 item 3 (d), entitled “Continuous development, maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites”.

123. The report of the Secretary-General on the continuous development, maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites (A/AC.198/1999/6) contained three proposals that sought to address the issue of equitable treatment of all official languages.

2. In response to that resolution, the report of the Secretary-General on the continuous development, maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites (A/AC.198/1999/6) was submitted to the Committee on Information at its twenty-first session, outlining three proposals.

With regard to the use of all six official languages on the Web site, several speakers specifically supported proposal C contained in the report of the Secretary-General on continuous development, maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites (A/AC.198/1999/6, paras. 33–42), which seeks to balance linguistic diversity and availability of resources for that purpose.

It should be reiterated that " in the context of consideration of the multilingual development (linguistic parity), maintenance and enrichment of United Nations Web sites, the first task would be to rationalize the structure of the sites, requiring a feasibility study on the complete redesign and restructuring of the sites in order to render them more user-friendly and flexible.
