It was this that prompted our country, in 1988, to introduce resolution 43/75 I of 7 December 1988, the first resolution adopted by the General Assembly on arms transfers and illicit arms trafficking.

Ecuador also considers that it is important to deal with international terrorism, international crime and illicit arms trafficking in the region, and will cooperate with the Organization in every way possible to combat these scourges and establish a zone of peace and security in the Mediterranean region.

١٢١ - وينبغي للدول تشجيع القيام بحملات، حيثما كان ذلك مناسبا بالتعاون مع منظمات المجتمع المدني، بما فيها المنظمات غير الحكومية، لزيادة وعي سكانها بالمخاطر المرتبطة بانتشار اﻷسلحة الصغيرة واﻷسلحة الخفيفة والاتجار غير المشروع باﻷسلحة.

(l) The issue of international arms transfers and illicit arms trafficking should be dealt with in conjunction with the maintenance of international peace and security and efforts aimed at easing international tensions, promoting social and economic development, peacefully resolving regional conflicts, preventing arms races and achieving disarmament under effective international control.
