1. The Fourth General Meeting of the United Nations system and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and its associated institutions was convened at the CARICOM Secretariat in Guyana on 25 and 26 January 2007.

Since effective implementation of a comprehensive disaster management strategy is demanding a multidisciplinary approach, the United Nations system reaffirmed its commitment of the widest participation in a collective approach to address this challenge, in collaboration with CARICOM and its associated institutions.

In its resolution 51/21 of 27 November 1996, the General Assembly urged the specialized agencies and other organizations and programmes of the United Nations system to initiate, maintain and increase consultation and programmes with ECO and its associated institutions in the attainment of their objectives.

By this draft resolution, the Pacific Islands Forum and its associated institutions reaffirm their commitment to a partnership of cooperation and friendship with the United Nations and its development partners.

We attach great importance and significance to the holding of the first general meeting between representatives of the Caribbean Community and its associated institutions and of the United Nations system in 1997, as recommended in paragraph 7.

A representative of the Department followed the proceedings and deliberations of the twenty-third Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, held in Georgetown in July 2002, and consulted the Assistant Secretary-General of CARICOM for Foreign and Community Relations on the holding of the third general meeting between representatives of the United Nations system and of CARICOM and its associated institutions.
