In 2008, Member States reaffirmed the primary and essential role of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, as well as the central role of the Commission on the Status of Women, in promoting the advancement of women and gender equality, and underlined their role in promoting and monitoring gender mainstreaming within the United Nations system (General Assembly resolution 63/159, paras. 19 and 21).
