Progress in the management of technology has also been significant and has affected a wide range of Secretariat operations, from remote translation and text processing to high-speed electronic access to United Nations documents through the new optical disk system, which has served to reduce by thousands the number of documents to be printed and distributed.

12. For meetings at Bonn, it is planned to use remote translation and text processing for in-sessional documentation. While there will be some additional costs involved, for example documents control staff will be required both in Geneva and Bonn, it should be noted that there will be no additional travel costs for translation and text processing staff.

In this regard, in order to ensure completion of the editing, translation and text processing for the projected number of cases in 2007 (65) and 2008 (135) by 31 December 2008, the permanent capacity of the Department would need to be supplemented with non-recurrent temporary assistance resources estimated in the amount of $425,700 for the biennium 2006-2007 and $884,100 for the biennium 2008-2009.
