وقد كان التنسيق والتعاون بين منظمة الوحدة الأفريقية والأمم المتحدة حاسمين في تحقيق النجاح لجهود السلام العديدة التي شارك فيها الزعماء الأفارقة، سواء كنا نتكلم عن خطة للتسوية بالنسبة للصحراء الغربية، أو اتفاقي لومي وأبوجا بشأن سيراليون، أو اتفاق لوساكا بشأن الصراع في جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، أو اتفاقات الجزائر بشأن إثيوبيا وإريتريا.

We hope that coming years will see a strengthening of cooperation between the OAU and the United Nations in all those priority fields. We hope too that they will see further efforts to improve the institutional capacity of the Organization of African Unity so that it can rely on its own resources in meeting the challenges facing the continent, specifically the settlement and management of armed conflicts.
وإذا كنا نأمل في أن تشهد الفترة المقبلة تعزيز آليات التعاون بين الأمم المتحدة ومنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية في كل هذه المجالات ذات الأولوية، فإننا نتطلع أيضا إلى تسخير الجهود للارتقاء بالقدرات المؤسسية لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية بما يمكنها من تفعيل إمكانياتها الذاتية لمواجهة التحديات التي تواجه قارتنا الأفريقية، وبصفة خاصة في مجال تسوية وإدارة النزاعات المسلحة التي تنشب في القارة.

In this respect we must emphasize the importance of cooperation between the OAU and the United Nations in order to promote a favourable climate for lasting national reconciliation in the country.
