Cooperation between the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Zaire, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Rwanda, and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi should be strengthened so as to facilitate a continual analysis of developments in the region.

In the same recommendation, the Committee considered it essential that a meeting between the Special Rapporteur on the right to education and the members of the drafting group be hosted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights at the earliest possible opportunity, financial resources permitting, and urged the Office of the High Commissioner to facilitate formal consultations with the human rights treaty bodies.

In the Inter-American system, there has been cooperation with the Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people and the Working Group on people of African descent, and also between the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, the African Union and the Inter-American Commission.

Mr. Errázuriz (Chile) said that Chile considered coordination between the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people and other United Nations mechanisms to be crucial and part of a process of broader coordination between the various United Nations agencies.

At its fifty-fourth session, the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights adopted resolution 2002/21 of 14 August 2002, requesting Mr. Yozo Yokota, member of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations, to prepare a working paper on possible cooperation between the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people and the Working Group.
